From your morning breakfast to your evening helping (or two) of dessert, coffee is the perfect beverage to sip alongside your meals. With that being said, there are certain foods that, when paired with coffee, make for a trip through sensory heaven. Here are some of the most classic coffee-food pairings that can be eaten while snuggled on your cozy couch, or enjoyed out on the town!
Fresh fruit and sweets with fruit incorporated into them offer a very light and healthy pairing for coffee. Berries of any sort (raspberries, blueberries, cranberries- you name it) go great with Kenyan and Haitian coffees. Yemeni and Jamaican coffees, in particular, are paired exclusively with blueberries. Peaches, plums, and apricots are also good company alongside a steaming cup of Haitian or Tanzanian coffee. As far as fruit tarts go, they typically match well with any medium to dark roast coffees of your choosing.
Of all of the coffee-food pairings in the world, coffee and chocolate have been intertwined in the greatest love affair of them all. These two treats together have graciously claimed the title of favorite coffee-food match as long as anyone can remember. Espresso beverages, mocha, lattes and ristrettos pair perfectly with milk and dark chocolates. As far as food choices go, dark chocolate brownies go hand-in-hand with full-bodied brews from Indonesia or Guatemala. Chocolate cake is also a no-brainer when it comes to coffee-food pairings; chocolate mousse cake goes best with any Arabica coffee.
An Italian without a coffee and biscotti in hand? An American or Canadian without a doughnut and a cup of Joe? Forget about it! These classic coffee pairings are burned into the brains of many because they are just that good. Biscotti is one of the most widely enjoyed baked goods paired with coffee in the US besides the doughnut. They come in a variety of flavors including classic almond, cherry, and chocolate. A flavorful biscotti pairs nicely with an espresso for instance.
Cake is another baked good that simply cannot be overlooked as a great match for coffee! Carrot cake is a must-taste alongside a steaming cup of Colombian coffee. Even better are cinnamon buns and croissants. Caramel and chocolate notes of Colombian coffees fit perfectly with cinnamon buns and warm flaky butter croissants. (I bet you’re drooling right now.) Moreover, sugary doughnuts, moist muffins, and crunchy cookies are all perfect for being dunked in light to medium roast brews. So, now you have a variety of sweets to choose from.
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day so, it’s only right that you serve it up your way. If that means sipping a cup of coffee alongside an equally tasty food pairing, then you’ve come to the right place! First off, the classic American bacon and eggs combo: this meal pairs best with a medium roast Costa Rican coffee. If you prefer a sweeter start to your morning, Nutella crepes are a match made in heaven with Colombian coffees or any espresso-based beverage. Then, of course, there is the holy grail that never fails- pancakes. Pancakes complement Kona and Nicaraguan coffee flavors exceptionally well and make for a fluffy, syrupy good time.
Happy Cold Brewing!
