Whether you’re a coffee addict or an avid tea sipper, (pinky up) you’re sure to experience a variety of benefits from both beverages. What’s quite peculiar is that we don’t often see the two drinks compared to one another. Is one beverage more virtuous than the other? Honestly,  in the coffee vs tea war, there’s no clear answer to that question; each of these pick-me-ups have lengthy lists of both pros and cons. Without further ado, here are some of the most well-known benefits and downsides of Coffee vs Tea.

Coffee:

Great benefits of coffee just continue to pop up virtually everywhere! There are claims that state that people who consume 3 to 5 cups of coffee per day are less likely to fall victim to many diseases. Some of which include Parkinson’s, type 2 diabetes, and various cancers. This means that those people are much less at risk of dying prematurely than people who drink little to no coffee on a daily basis. Also, as most of us are aware of, coffee contains tremendous amounts of antioxidants. Antioxidants protect the body from harmful molecules and they prevent cell damage throughout your body.

The Downsides:

First off, coffee can be highly acidic in nature depending on the method in which it’s prepared. Its acidic qualities can cause turmoil in your stomach and can initiate digestive problems. If you’re looking to avoid high acidity, try cold brewing your coffee!

Another con can be a link to bone issues. It’s said that 4 or more cups of coffee per day can lessen bone density by 2 to 4%. Also, a major concern relating to coffee is its caffeine content; coffee contains a much higher level of caffeine than tea. Caffeine stimulates the body and if you have a low tolerance, you may wind up feeling fidgety or anxious. As far as your heart is concerned, coffee can increase your risk of heart disease. Finally, coffee is a diuretic. This means it flushes water from your system leaving you dangerously dehydrated if you don’t drink enough water to compensate.

Tea:

Tea is known for boasting a lengthy list of benefits. Like coffee, tea is rich in antioxidants! These antioxidants protect you from the hardening of your blood vessels and they prevent inflammation. Unlike coffee, tea does prevent the risk of heart disease and even the risk of strokes. Tea is also said to improve brain health. Those who consume at least 2 cups of tea per day have a lesser risk of declines in memory. Lastly, but certainly not least, tea is linked to anti-aging!

The cons:

The first downside of tea is simply the fact that it stains your pearly whites significantly. No one wants yellow-hued teeth. Another con is that it can deplete your iron levels. It’s said that if you commonly drink tea with your meals, you could be victim to a 62% loss of iron absorption. Coffee only reduces it by about 35%. Moreover, if you’re particularly sensitive to the effects of caffeine, tea’s caffeine content may be a downside. Though it contains less than coffee does, it can still yield 14-70 milligrams per serving depending on the type of tea.

Coffee vs Tea may be a difficult battle in which to choose the winner. Each has its own beneficial qualities as well as its downsides. When it comes to choosing coffee vs tea, it’s really up to your taste preferences and which downsides you’re willing to endure.
